A drive through Maryland's Wine Country

This is just an old fashioned Sunday Drive in the Maryland Wine Country designed to give you a chance to have some fun and enjoy driving your Mercedes-Benz.

The route is one BIG loop with lots of little roads to explore. It's OK to follow your muse and make one or more detours. Each side trip will provide an interesting glimpse into the State of Maryland’s wine and agricultural industry.

Each of the wineries on the route is very different, and even if you do not drink wine, you'll enjoy the stop! You'll also have a chance to visit Ladew Gardens, one of the most interesting historic house and garden museums on the east coast.

Starting Point

The loop starts at Star Auto Service, Inc., a GWS sponsor located at 1024 York Road in Towson, MD. This location puts you on York Road just inside the Baltimore Beltway. From the starting point, you can head East or West. If you go East, you'll want to do some exploring on your way because Boordy Vineyards doesn't open until 1:00 PM.

There are plenty of little towns with small restaurants along the route where you can stop for a bite to eat. During the summer Ladew also has a wonderful café and often concerts in the evening.

The Western Route

  • Start at Rte 695 and York Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto York Road and move into the left lane
  • Turn LEFT at the next light and make a U turn to come back out onto York Road
  • Turn RIGHT and continue on York Road to Seminary Avenue
  • Turn LEFT and follow Seminary Avemue until it ends
  • Turn RIGHT onto Falls Road, and follow it to the Basignani Winery on your left hand side at 15722
  • From Basignani, turn LEFT onto Falls and follow it to Gunpowder Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Gunpowder, and follow it to Beckleysville Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Beckleysville - you'll cross over the Prettyboy Reservoir before you reach Middletown Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Middletown and cross I-83 to York Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto York - look for Woodhall Wine Cellars on your Right. There is a TIGHT Hairpin turn into the driveway, a big drop off with no guard rail!
  • From Woodhall, make a RIGHT onto York Road and go into the town of Hereford, a cute town with little shops
  • At the light, make a LEFT onto Monkton Road
  • Just after Monkton look for Route 138
  • Go STRAIGHT onto Route 138 to Trover Road (Monkton Road dog legs to the right and leads to scenery that's worth a side trip - anyone want to an Old Mill Building?)
  • Turn RIGHT onto Trover and continue to Old York Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Old York and continue to Houcks Mill Road
  • Turn LEFT onto Houcks Mill, and continue to Jarretsville Pike
  • Turn RIGHT onto Jarrettsville Pike - Ladew Gardens will be on your Left hand side. Pull in and park either in the lot or in the field.
  • After Leaving Ladew Gardens, Turn LEFT out of the parking lot onto Jarrettsville Pike and go to Hess Road
  • Turn LEFT and follow Hess to Route 152, Fallston Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Fallston and proceed to Baldwin Mill Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Baldwin Mill and follow to Long Green Pike
  • Turn RIGHT onto Long Green Pike - Boordy Vineyards will be on your Right
  • Leaving Boordy, turn RIGHT onto Long Green Pike and continue to Glen Arm Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Glen Arm and continue to Cromwell Bridge Road
  • Turn RIGHT onto Cromwell Bridge Road which will take you back to Route 695
