The action starts with member processing at 8:00AM. The Service and Parts Departments will open their doors at 8:00AM. ASC will have coffee and pastries for the early birds. Lunch will be provided at about 11:30. The event will end promptly at 3:00PM. Please remember to order your parts in advance from ASC at 703-525-2100. This is the only way to be sure that the parts you need for the work you've planned will be on hand. ASC will have service techs on hand to give you advice and keep you out of trouble. They are there to guide you, not do the job for you. Members are allotted two hours for their work. Second cars will be put at the end of the line. Please fill out the form in the centerfold and mail it in immediately. The charge is $15 per person. There will be no charge for cars that are being inspected for Tri-O-Rama. May, three of us made the trip to Virginia International Raceway and to nearby South Boston, Virginia, to finalize track and hotel arrangements for this national MBCA event.
I can state without reservation that the track is fantastic! VIR is a like a country club for cars. If you have not yet been there, the 3.27 mile course winds up and down the beautiful countryside like a ribbon on silk. The attendant facilities are first rate. And, the hotel? We selected the Marriott Berry Hill Plantation - a 30-minute drive from the track. In a recent article in the Washington Post, automotive writer Warren Brown wrote about MBUSA's introduction of the new E55 at VIR and his stay at Berry Hill. Like us, Mr. Brown was impressed with the care taken by both Marriott and the former owner (a European insurance firm) to preserve the heritage and condition of the plantation, including the slave quarters and gravesite. This 1840s plantation has been completely restored and a modern hotel wing has been added. It's absolutely incredible! You'll be very impressed with the prices and the food! But... I don't want to get ahead of myself. We understand that some of you cannot attend the full four days of Tri-O-Rama. So if you're looking for a great weekend getaway, this is the place! Registration opens on Friday, September 12. On Saturday, we'll host the Concours d' Elegance on the hotel grounds - there is absolutely no need to go anywhere else and there isn't a more beautiful site for more than a hundred miles. On Saturday evening, the first social event - the Welcome Reception - will also be held at the hotel in the original mansion. On Sunday, the Autocross and Rallye will both be held. (We are trying to move the Defensive Driving School to Sunday so that it will not interfere with track time on the full track.) And in the evening, Concours and Rallye awards will be presented at the Biergarten dinner. Monday will bring a full day of track events at Virginia International Raceway with both the Performance Driving School and the quarter mile Acceleration Runs. On Tuesday, it's another day at VIR with full-course time trials. The event wraps up that evening with the Grand Finale banquet back at Berry Hill. All of the driving event awards will be presented that evening. Berry Hill is only four and a half hours from Washington. Whether you can come for all four days or just for the weekend, you will thoroughly enjoy this event! If you're a track junkie, this is the place for you. I'll fess up. It's the new E55. I saw my first one at a local dealer as it was being delivered to its eager but unappreciative new owner. This philistine (a person who is guided by materialism and is usually disdainful of intellectual or artistic values, b: one uninformed in a special area of knowledge) was actually leaning on his new car! And, he wasn't wrapped in terry cloth! The damage had been done, though. My heart raced. My knees were weak. My brain was awash with thoughts of options and colors (his was silver). I drove home unaware I was driving. Next, I saw a black one on the road. Pant! Pant! Then two silvers in two different locations. At our autocross in Winchester, the father of a participant visited the event in his new Tectite Gray Metallic version. In all, I saw maybe six by last Friday. Then on Saturday... ah, Saturday... GWS Treasurer Jim Glenn showed up at the club's storage garage (where several of us were readying for the picnic) in his brandy new, and so incredibly fantastic, silver E55 with the optional panorama sun roof and high tech solar panel. I drooled all over my clean shirt! I was driven over the edge by PBS' Motorweek tonight. After seeing Pat talk about the dangers of low tire pressure and reviews of the new 350Z rag top and the zoomy new Chevy SSR (a folding hard top convertible sports pickup thingy) and with only 10 minutes to go... John did a review of... gasp... the E55. In their test the beautiful silver (again) beast did 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds and the quarter mile in a tick or two over 12 seconds at 114 mph. He says: "It's as fast as the new Porsche Turbo." I'm smitten! I'm sunk! Lust has become love!

a rocky start with scoring, but I am muddling through. Please, keep me advised of any mistakes that you notice so that I can correct them before the final points tally. We had a great couple of events over the last two months. WSSC is proving to be popular with the majority of our autocrossers because of its location. It was also good to get back to Winchester, but on a sunny and not too hot day for a change. I look forward to seeing you all back at WSSC in August.
Autocross #3 - "O Slalom Mio" Great turnout for the June event at WSSC. It turned out to be a super event. The only down side was that we had to turn away some cars to maintain our 50 car limit. Bill Stewart came out in fine fashion, yet again, to secure another FMBTD and overall Benz victory. It was also good to see Bill Hopper out thrashing with us. Bill is attending more and more driving events and we are grateful to have him... Only so long as he keeps bringing the Segway. Denise Dersin trounced the competition again by piloting her CLK320 (we know who really owns the car) to secure the ladies' FTD for the Benz group. Ted, look out! You are squarely in her cross hairs. The "Foreign Car" classes were also exciting. Bill and Angie Brochu returned to secure overall wins. Congratulations to the husband and wife team! Speaking of Bill and Angie Brochu... *peeks under a rock*, where have you been? We miss you guys. Now, I am not one to poke fun but... Our glorious leader, Joe Wozney, and spoose Bobbie finally returned to autocross with a hack and a sputter. Not them, but rather the venerable white Porsche 911. After much pushing, grunting, and coughing, the car fired and Joe and Bobbie were able to complete their runs in fine fashion. Please, take note of the picture below. Special credit goes to the pit crew's heaving and pushing Joe's car.
Autocross #4 - "Oh! My Aching Kidneys!" Since renamed "Don't Fence Me In" Was this the same lot we used for years and years? Couldn't be. Pleasant breeze, sunshine, comfortable temperatures... Very strange for us veteran autocrossers. Great turn out for the Winchester event. Some even traveled far and wide to join us. Gary Wallick drove all the way down from New Jersey to give Klaus a run for his money. For the first time that I can remember, we had two 230SLs competing head to head. Unfortunately, Gary was unable to overcome Klaus. Of course, having a distributor problem didn't help matters either. Tom Heacock to the rescue! Tom worked to get Gary rolling again for the long trip back to New Jersey. Way to go Tom! Bill Stewart continues his dominant reign in the 16-Valve class. However, Bruce Roth claimed his first FTD of the season in his SLK 32. As clean as our Concourse Curmudgeon keeps the car, it's no wonder it splits the air with ease. Debbie Hirtes claimed top honors for the ladies again. While Jim Smith "hot footed" it all the way through the course in fine style. You see, Jim's car has been around since rocks were soft. That kind of age tends to affect the equipment as Jim found out with hot coolant spraying on his feet. Tom Heacock to the rescue again as he and others got Jim road worthy. For the first time this season, the high horsepower crowd was mute. They ought to have been! This course was all about who has the ponies. The battle raged between Kenyatta, Marty, and Mac. Ultimately, Kenyatta came out on top by a 4 one-hundreths of a second margin! I hope we can continue to have battles like this in the future. Oh, Jack "Mr. Traction Control" Douglas learned not to push the magic button in midstream. The ladies came out strong as well. Ahnie Senft took the non-Benz ladies' win. Not bad... four events so far this season and we've had four different ladies take firsts! See you next month!

Annual Membership Meeting of the Greater Washington Section will be held at American Service Center on Sunday, October 19, from 1:00PM to 3:00PM. Come out and join us for this opportunity to meet your section officers, committee chairs, and board members.
Section bylaws stipulate that there be an election of officers for two-year terms in even numbered years. As this is an odd numbered year, there will be no elections at the meeting. However, we will review the past year and provide the opportunity and ample time for any questions or suggestions on the management of your section. The annual report of the section's finances will also be presented. American Service Center will open just for our meeting and will provide us light refreshments after our meeting concludes. Please take this opportunity to attend your meeting and get to see all the new cars in the showroom too. Attendees celebrating five year multiples of club membership (5, 10, 15 years and so on) in 2003 will be awarded special club anniversary pins. Director and National Driving Events Committee Chairman Frank Cozza, and Mary Alice Cozza will be assisting at a Mid-Atlantic Defense Driving School at Ramapo College in Northern New Jersey on Sunday, August 17, 2003. The School will include ABS braking, a slalom, and obstacle avoidance. Greater Washington Section President Joe Wozney will run a mini-autocross.
Greg Calabro is the Event Coordinator and a member of the Northern New Jersey Section MBCA. Greg has attended many GWS events including a recent autocross and the Annual Picnic where he was a judge and helped with morning set up. The event cost is $20 per person. USA (MBUSA) reported sales of 17,246 new vehicles in June, an increase of 6.7 percent over June 2002. June sales helped propel the company to a year-to-date record of 105,901 units, a 2.9 percent increase over last year's 102,927.
Sales for the month were led by the C-Class with 5,769 vehicles sold, an increase of 4.6 percent over the 5,516 sold during June 2002. Other volume leaders for the month were the E-Class with sales of 4,230 and the M-Class with sales of 2,411. The company's flagship S-Class model line increased 20.4 percent to 1,621. It also recorded its highest month on record for sales of all-wheel-drive 4MATIC models. On a year-to-date basis, C-, E- and M-Class model lines achieved the highest volumes. E-Class sales showed the strongest gain with an increase of 56.8 percent on a year-to-date basis. High-performance AMG vehicles continued a record of strong performance with sales of 1,054 vehicles for the month and boosting year to date sales by 45.4 percent to 5,434. MBUSA broadened its AMG performance base with the recent launch of the E55 AMG, the fastest production sedan ever built by Mercedes-Benz. June also marked the launch of the Maybach brand in the U.S. MBUSA sold 13 of the ultra-exclusive, super-luxury Maybach sedans. Separately, MBUSA's Starmark certified pre-owned vehicle program set another record for June with sales of 4,584 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 25,514, an increase of 17.4 percent over last year.

Central Virginia Section has arranged for a tour of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond, Virginia on August 23 at 10:00AM.
The site of the gardens was, at one time, an Indian hunting ground, a recreation center, a children's hospital, and a residence. It is named for Lewis Ginter, a prominent businessman who owned the property in the late 1800s. His niece, Grace Arents, who was an avid gardener, bought the land after Ginter's death. Her will stipulated the foundation of a botanical garden in her uncle's honor. Her wish was realized in 1984 with the foundation of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. The Garden's new conservatory opened on March 22, 2003. The structure is the only classical, domed conservatory open to the public in the Mid-Atlantic region. The 16,617 square-foot complex houses exotic and unusual plants from subtropical and tropical regions of the world. The garden comprises 40 acres. The Garden Cafe offers indoor and outdoor seating and features a salad bar, soups, entree specials, sandwiches, and desserts. Prices range from $5 to $14. Members will meet at the parking lot at 10:00AM. Lunch will be on your own. More information on the gardens is available on their website. Pre-registration for the event is required. the National Business Office of the Mercedes-Benz Club announced that members can now join additional sections. This will permit members who live near other club sections to receive the newsletters of those sections. For example, members who live in the southern part of the GWS might be interested in attending events in the Virginia or Central Virginia sections or folks in northern Maryland or Delaware might want to participate in South Jersey or Delaware Valley section events. It will also benefit "snowbirds" wintering in the south.
The cost is $15 per additional section and membership in the additional sections must run concurrent with the member's existing membership expiration date. Voting privileges are limited to national elections and the primary section membership.

bylaws require that The Treasurer's annual report of the Section's financial condition be published in the Tri-Star. Any member with questions on the financial report or Section finances in general has the right to review the Section's books after making arrangements with the Treasurer.
An internal review of the club's financial records was made by independent members of the club. Their findings were that the club's financial records accurately reflected its assets as of December 31, 2002 as well as its income and expenses from January 1 through December 31, 2002.
